Sector 3 · Gravitonics

Quick answer

Sector 3 opens Gravitonics, sends you through staircases that do not behave like staircases, and finishes by turning the particle accelerator on. Two achievements mark the route and one of them is the single biggest drop-off point in the game.

SEC. 03Gravitonics

Sector 3 opens Gravitonics, sends you through staircases that do not behave like staircases, and ends with the particle accelerator switched on. It is the shortest sector in the game and the one that loses the most players: 59.6% arrive at the Terminus, 19.6% ever turn the accelerator on.

What this sector is asking

After sequencing, the game starts breaking rules. Gravitonics is where "the room is not built the way it looks" becomes a puzzle mechanic rather than set dressing. The store copy is explicit that the puzzles "challenge the rules of time, gravity, and space", and Sector 3 is the gravity chapter.

That has a direct consequence for how you talk to each other: your partner's description of a room may be of a room that does not currently exist in your version of it. When that happens, do not argue about who is wrong. Both of you are right about what you can see.

Checkpoints

AchievementWhat it marks%

RelativityExplored impossible staircases21.3
Ensnared PotentialTurned the particle accelerator on19.6

Three achievements, three states. Note that Spiraling already sits at 29.4% while the previous sector's terminus sits at 59.6% — that means roughly half the players who reach the terminus do not get into Gravitonics at all. The gate, not the staircase, is the filter.

The gravity rules in practice

Three behaviours are worth internalising before you start moving:

  • The staircase is a mechanism. Relativity is worded as "explored impossible staircases", which means the staircases are an explored system, not a corridor. If the geometry looks wrong, the geometry is the puzzle.
  • Your tool is now a traversal tool, not just a key. The Hook Gun's documented use is grappling to Energized surfaces. In a sector that rearranges its own geometry, the surfaces that stay put become your anchors.
  • Verticality changes who can see what. In a normal room, the split is left/right. Here it is up/down, and the person below can lose sight of the person above entirely.

Where pairs stall in Sector 3

  • Searching for a normal exit. Sector 3's way forward is usually a change in the room's orientation, not a door with a sign on it.
  • Riding the geometry without a plan. The staircases will take you somewhere. Decide where you want to be before you start climbing, or you will loop.
  • Losing contact. Vertical separation plus rule-bending geometry is the worst possible combination for a walkie-talkie. Agree on a counting convention — "I am on level two of the spiral, facing the light" — before you split.
  • Treating the accelerator as the finish line. Ensnared Potential fires when the accelerator is on, which is the sector's end, not the game's. It also visibly changes the facility, and Sector 4 assumes that change happened.

The accelerator

"Turned the particle accelerator on" is a two-person operation by construction: the accelerator is the thing a facility this size exists to run, and the game's own sectors put its terminus in Sector 2 and its start switch here. That means the switch is either physically distant from the machine or requires a state the other player is holding.

Two practical notes. First, do the switch last in your session — once the accelerator runs, the facility's condition changes and you do not want to be mid-puzzle when the ambience shifts. Second, if nothing happens when one of you presses something, the other one is not done reading. Almost every dead input in this game is a two-view dependency.

Getting the sector closed

Ensnared Potential is the closing checkpoint. When it fires, the accelerator is running and R&D Headquarters is next: second floor access, a building-wide power restoration and a prototype upgrade that fewer than seven percent of players have.

Next: Sector 4 · R&D Headquarters.
