The two endings at Rift Zero
The Rift Zero console asks one question: secure or close. Securing gives Dawn of Tomorrow, closing gives Tomorrow May Never Come, and you cannot unlock both in one run — chapter select is how you see the other.
The last thing you touch in We Were Here Tomorrow is a console, and it asks one question: secure Rift Zero, or close it. Those are two achievements, not two cutscenes — Dawn of Tomorrow is the secure branch, Tomorrow May Never Come is the close branch — and you cannot unlock both in the same run.

Which console choice gives which achievement
This is the part most write-ups leave out: the achievement names do not say which verb they belong to. Read against their own unlock text, they do.
| Console choice | Achievement | Unlock text |
|---|---|---|
| Stabilise / secure the rift | Dawn of Tomorrow | Secured Rift Zero |
| Close the rift | Tomorrow May Never Come | Closed Rift Zero |
If you are the one holding the achievement list open on a second screen, that table is the whole decision. Everything below it is about when you get to make it.
The five checkpoints you pass on the way there
Sector 6 is the only sector where the puzzle chain and the story are the same object, so the achievements double as a checklist for the run. They appear in this order:
| Order | Achievement | What it marks |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Through the Looking Glass | Ventured Beyond the Rift |
| 2 | We Are Friends! | Got acquainted with an alien lifeform |
| 3 | Farpoint | Discovered the Human Outpost |
| 4 | Why So Molecular? | Restored power to the Theta Splice device |
| 5 | Essentia Emendare | Finished the expedition team's project |
Then the console. Nothing between checkpoint 5 and the choice except the walk to it — which is why the ending is the one part of the game you can see twice in one evening.
What chapter select does, and what it does not
- Achievements already unlocked stay unlocked. Chapter select is not a new save; it is a replay of a chapter inside the same profile.
- The console asks again. The branch is not remembered as "chosen", so replaying the finale lets you take the other verb.
- Nothing else in the game branches. There is no second decision point, no faction, no inventory consequence. If you are replaying only for the other achievement, you can play the finale and stop.
The Sector 6 page puts it plainly: a checkpoint replay is enough for the other ending, so plan the second ending as a short separate session rather than a save-scum.
Should you pick one first?
There is no wrong order, and the game does not reward either choice with content the other locks out — the two achievements are the entire difference on the achievement side. Two practical notes:
- Pick the verb your partner argues for. The final exchange is a conversation between the two players, and the choice lands better if it is the one you actually disagreed about.
- Leave the other one for a session where you are already replaying. A second full run for a second ending is a waste; a finale replay is not.
Spoiler-light version
If you only want to know what you are walking into: the last room is a machine with a console, the room is the destination the whole facility has been pointing at, and the two options are both "resolve it" — one keeps it, one ends it. Nothing you did earlier changes which options appear.
Questions
Can I unlock both endings in one playthrough? No. They are separate achievements and the game does not offer a third option that grants both.
Does the ending change anything I can carry forward? Not on the achievement side, and we have not seen any unlock that depends on which ending you chose. Both endings are recorded separately in the achievement list, which is the only place the choice is stored.
Do I need to finish the earlier sectors again? No — the replay is the finale, not the campaign. The Sector 6 page treats one checkpoint replay as the whole cost of the second ending.
Is the ending choice timed? No. The console waits; nothing in the room is on a timer once you reach it.
